My New Train Book

I strongly suspect that, if you ignore archive items squirreled away by my dad, this is item number 1 in the archive. It's possibly the first book I ever owned and is in surprisingly good condition if that is indeed the case. I was born in 1961 but the book is dated 1958 - and actually it is brilliant, even to someone now in their sixties.
The cover is repeated on the back page but with caption: A six-car Inter-City Diesel train climbing Cowlairs incline on the way from Glasgow to Edinburgh.
My favourite featuring 27003: This electric train is leaving one of the longest tunnels in the country, the new Woodhead tunnel.
I had to look. By wonderful coincidence 27003 became NS 1501, seen here in the Railway Museum at Utrecht in June 2026.
One for the Aussies. I always feel a little guilty that, given I have made 93 trips to Australia, the archives are somewhat lacking in Australian content. My New Train Book delivers: This engine, 'Lady Norrie', has a very tough job. It is hauling a train through a mountain range in South Australia.
